This short film recounts a few late night interviews and performances in Shanghai, China with Organist Bill Heid and Drummer Al Gordon. It showcases their talents and pays respect to the masters of the jazz organ genre. Bill and Al grew up in Pittsburgh which was a mecca for jazz organ groups in the 60's. They met in Shanghai with a whole lot in common and often recalled one of the country's greatest organ clubs located in Pittsburgh by the name of "The Hurricane Bar". Located in Pittsburgh's Hill District, " The Hurricane" was a fire-engine red club with the mighty Hammond organ in a loft above the bar. The club nightly featured Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff, Lonnie Smith, Don Patterson, and all the great organ cats with some of the baddest organ drummers on the planet namely Joe Dukes, Ben Dixon, Randy Gelispie, and Billy James. Loud clothing, hipsters and soul food with names like 'Shack Fried Chicken' and 'Brazilian Fried Shrimp' were as much a part of The Hurricane as the music. Bill Heid and Al Gordon's nightly sessions playing and talking about the music they call "That Dirty Thang" is a unique look into the jazz organ group of today and will surely capture your attention.

  • This is great! It's Always good to see and hear Bill. He's the real deal on the B3. The next step in organ after Larry Young.

When he left Detroit there was a definite void. Loved the intro. Nice work! Kudos to you.

  • Bill's a monster player, and a hell of a guy. I left DC last summer, and he's one of the only parts of that town I miss. Thanks so much for putting this up...

  • Bill, Miss you....you are the best. Miss those

cocktail hours and Fridays nites with ya at the Thai Chi in Motown. Your style and music will forever be ingrained in my mind. Your pal, Chuck......P.S. It appears to me you're are never far from of Asian poo-thang....your women of choice as you often times remarked to me.

  • Oh yes! Bill Heid. Intellectual, comedian,"chittlin" philosopher and, I might add, one of the greatest Hammond organists ever. This is priceless! Thanks so much for this.
