  • My point is that the probable date given by scholars for Daniel is its compilation, as the same scholars usually admit that parts of Daniel are much older and were compiled into it later. I believe even Rowley admits that. He dates its compilation to 164 BC, a time they couldn't possibly have used the ancient Chaldean in the older sections of daniel or likely even reproduced it if they tried.

  • p.s Discussions like this are the reason I stay here on YT. This made my day seeing debates on such topics. I know at times I might go over board with things but I'm a guy who means well but likes to fan the flames, I get a kick out of fanning flames.

  • I think I will discuss all of this when I do Daniel my the non-theological bible site. i may discuss the differences from Qumran also.

  • the 4 scrolls at Qumran that contain the chapters that are Aramaic make the transitions also and are written bi lingual. It would be good to compare 1QDanA, 1QDanB,4QDana, 4QDanb, 4QDanC, 4QDanD and 4QDanE. I go with a later date due to it's bilingual nature. So we need to ask why no Aramaic in Tobit?

  • Good discussion here. The Aramaic runs from 2:4b to 7:28. We need to ask also what was found at Qumran. Also we need to ask what older elements were interpolations inserted into the text. eg. older Hebrew prayers in Ch 3. Hartman and Di Lella need to be looked at also. What of the Aramaic in Ezra 4:8-6:18 and 7:1-26, Jer. 10:11, and Gen31:47?

  • Even Rowley doesn't date the Aramaic to 164 BC, that is just his date for the compiling of Daniel. For those parts of Daniel that are written in ancient Chaldean, Rowley argues that they couldn't be later than 5th century, and leans toward 3rd century. There just isn't any question the language wasn't what was spoken or written in the 2nd century BC. I think it is very misleading to say Tobit was written before Daniel relying on Rowley when he would admit many parts may be so much older.

  • Even that cite of Rowley, 5th century to 3rd century puts parts of Daniel 100 to 300 years older than Tobit (generally recognized as 2nd century BC).

  • Daniel's date is in much dispute, partly because at least a part of it is originally written in ancient Chaldean, something that would be very dificult for a 2nd century writer to duplicate. Many of the "scholars" claiming a later date do so simply because they don't believe his predictions or prophecies could be that on the money unless written later. Most of the scholars you cite actually admit much of the book was 6th century BC and then "redacted" to add the prophesies.

  • I never understood why Catholics took this book so seriously. It was obviously written in Aramaic, probably in the 2nd century BC, and is not anything like the books of the OT.

  • That story is definitely a favorite... it's a lot like the fairy tales of other countries :)
