The Sweet Science is like any other true science - it's practitioners operate within the paradigms of their time. Tunney was on the leading edge of that paradigm for his time. Joe Louis was, too. Ali broadened the scope of the Sweet Science with his speed, his grace, and his guile. All great fighters learned lessons from their forebears. We'll never know how Joe Louis would have fought if he'd been born in 1942 like Ali. Trying to guess is pointless, in my opinion. I honor them all instead.

Carnera was tough and had guts to last with Louis this long.

Size didn't matter to Joe. If he could hit you, you were practically gone.

O MAN!!! 4:12 WHAT A FUCKING RIGHT HAND
-
Joe Louis, one of the greatest fighters in the history of boxing.
-
Primo Canera's fighting style was almost exactly that of the Klitschko Brothers.
-
Even David Haye would beat Carnera.

you need more than guts to get into a boxing ring
you need actual boxing skill or punching power, and carnera had neither
-
Boy that left hook at 7:12 was just plain lethal. that knocked the man mountain straight on his ass

Man, Joe louis throws some of the hardest punches i have ever seen, never mind foreman.

man people say that joe louis was to small for today heavyweights are stupid....
marciano, louis, ali, frazier, quarry, jersey joe, this son of guns would be in jail for murder if they were to fight this big heavyweights ....
(maybe not in his prime riddick bowe)

i like how the ref (arthur donovan?) is constantly moving in a circle around the fighters as opposed to picking one position and standing there like an umpire.
It would be nice to see the film slowed down to a realistic speed. Look at how the ring ropes vibrate. The speed is way too fast. It's hard to get a sense of how ponderous these guys really were until you have watched a lot of speed-corrected film.

There is a slow motion replay at the end.

@dissimulate666 Yeah. I made the fifth round 2:36 or 37. They look like a pair of lightweights in there speedwise, though Louis was very fast with his hands. I think Louis -Walcott amongst others is filmed at the correct speed.

@madmax8903
I changed the speed of the film to real time with a program and noticed no significant difference. I can upload a round of it if you want to see it for yourself.

@TheGreatA Yes, please do.

I uploaded the video on daily motion. It's only round 5. Louis's hands still look quick. Search for "thegreata".
