Here is the video I made of Katie, my cat, twitching.
She started twitching (while sleeping or simply
relaxing) about a few months after we adopted her from
a local shelter around this time last year. It became
more prominent around December of last year. By about
early February of this year, however, the twitching
decreased significantly and I have no idea why. Now I
rarely see her doing it, if at all (I think it has
been at least two weeks since I last saw her doing
it).

The video I have attached is an example of her
twitching at a time when it was the most pronounced
and much more frequent (the video was made back in
December I believe). As you can see from the video,
she appears aware of her surroundings and does not
look like she is having a seizure at all except for
the twitching. Her eyes look normal and she is not
drooling or exhibiting any other signs that I would
associate with seizures. She just looks like a normal
relaxed cat who happens to be twitching.

It appears that the twitching is centrally related to
something in her core that causes her body to move.
The twitching is certainly more pronounced in her legs
or arms but it still appears to be coming from the
core of her body as opposed to within her legs or arms
themselves. Her head does not really move at all with
the twitching.

When it occurrs, the twitching lasts for a while -
typically for as long as she is relaxing. It did not
seem to go away at all - if she was in the same spot
relaxing for a couple hours, then the twitching would
also last for a couple of hours.

Even during the periods where she had it more
frequently, however, it would not be present every day.
On a typical day back when it was bad, we would
notice it at least three days a week while she was
relaxing next to us while we watched t.v. or a movie.
If she got up and walked around you can't really tell
if she is twitching at all. I am not sure if that is
because the twithcing stopped or if putting weight on
her muscles caused them to stop twitching so
noticeably. It did not affect her ability to walk at
all - she ran around like a normal cat. She did not
appear to be lethargic at all. In fact, she is a very
active and aggressive cat (certainly not one for
laps).

She is a pretty small cat. She is full size and is
about 8 lbs. She has a small face and body structure. She has yellow eyes.

At first, the video is a bit shaky but it gets better.
In the background you can hear a movie that we were
watching - if you want, just hit the mute botton.

Thank you so much for your help with this.
Any advice or assistance you can provide would be
wonderful and much appreciated.

  • Hi, Glad to finally see a video of this. I just noticed this in my cat. Looks a lot like your kitty. What did you do or get help for it? Im a bit unerved and worried. My Rosie seems fine but for this slight shivering.Any advice please?

  • This is different from Earl's twitching but it makes me curious. I wonder if it is more of a nerve or muscle thing. Earl might be a nerve problem but there's no way to diagnosis or treat if that is his situation. earl's problem has evolved over time. it's mostly his head now where it started out as his limbs.

katie is in an unusual position. does she normally lay twisted like that? does the twitching happen in various positions?

  • my cat does the sam thing too, I'm very very worried each time she sleeps or rests...

Did someone has a solution to this from vets ? please

I also would like to ask everybody here, if your cats shivers like that too, how old are they ? I'm always afraid my cat wouldn't live a long life because of that...

    thanks

  • My cat does the same thing but all over her body. We took her to different vets several times and they said she's perfectly healthy. Check out my vid twitching cat.

  • My cat has had wild attacks of seizures her whole life. That looks a lot like her mild ones. But that also could be her half asleep, not keeping her weight up. I also see that with my other two cats. Good luck :/

  • Toxic colon or worms

  • Just wondering if you found out what is happening with Katie. My cat does the same thing.

  • oi whats that noise in the background..?? it sounds like someone is getting bashed up!!

  • Dear Katie,

Did you get a diagnosis for your Katie? My cat Hope does the Same exact thing. It scares me. I am hoping that you can give me some guidance or information about what this is.

    Thanks so much,

    Deb & Furkids

  • aweh what a beautiful cat !
