Indonesia, as the world's most populous Muslim country, has a long history as a tolerant and pluralistic society.

But controversial new anti-pornography legislation has sparked debate across the nation.

The law criminalises all public acts and material capable of violating community morality.

But critics say the legislation is too vague, overlaps existing legislation and tramples local customs in a country of ethnic, religious and cultural diversity.

This week, 101 East travels to the holiday island of Bali to ask if Indonesia can succeed in enforcing a new moral tone across its vast archipelago.

  • what's with your obsession with "urinating" and "ejaculating"?? I bet you watch those "sick and pathetic" videos everyday! Hypocrites!

  • Sir or Ma'am: Although democracies do prescribe for the rule of the majority, modern democracies also protect the rights of minorities. Indonesia is a majority Muslim country of course, but it also is an amalgamation of thousands of islands with a diverse group of people who all don't share a common culture. And many of those people did not come to Indonesia; Indonesia came to them. So you make no sense when you demand that people who don't share the views of the Muslim majority to leave.

  • That's why we never respect islam and their laws because of that!

  • Sir, have you ever heard of individual rights? It is one of the basic and most important principles of modern democracy. To prevent us from having the same problems as Athenian democracy, tyranny of the majority is curbed by the rights of individuals to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, individual liberty and the rights to the pursuit of happiness. Take those away, and we become a decadent tyranny. Don't forget that public opinion polls is never a substitute for thought.

  • According to Islam, a daughter has rights to only half (1/2) of what a son could receive from their father's inheritance, same goes for the wife. A woman's legal testimony (under Sharia) bear only half the weight of a man. While a woman can only marry a one man, a man can have up to 4 women as wives at any one time. A woman can only initiate divorce on the basis of sexual inadequacy whereas a man need not give a reason to initiate a divorce. You should read the Qur'an before spouting bigotry.
