The old man is Harlan Wade, the father of Alma, and the man responsible for her suffering. Alma's a 26-year-old undead woman, and she murdered him out of anger.
The nightmares aren't actually under her control, they simply happen to be violent because they roam inside her mind. She also doesn't want to kill her son...it's just that she's so hateful that her attempts to hug him wind up killing him.
Sad.
