Bulgaria takes down two-time defending World Champion Brazil
Ancona, Italy, October 2, 2010 -- Bulgaria, which finished a disappointing third in the FIVB Men's World Championship Pool E first round, upset two-time defending World Champion Brazil 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 Saturday night in the second round Pool N held in front of 6,050 fans at the PalaRossini in Ancona, Italy.
Bulgaria and Brazil were already secured into the third round and tonight's match simply determined which pool the two powerhouse teams would play in. Bulgaria will compete in Pool Q in Florence, while Brazil will move into Pool R in the third round. The match seemed to have less importance to each team as Poland was already eliminated from qualification into the third round after finishing with an 0-2 record in Pool N - dubbed the Pool of Death with world ranked teams of No. 1, No. 6 and No. 7 in the three-team pool.
Bulgaria was led in scoring by Tsvetan Sokolov's 15 points on 13 spikes and two aces. Valentin Bratoev added 12 points in the victory. Brazil captain Giba recorded a team-high eight points, while Leandro Vissotto and Rodrigao scored seven points each. The planned line-up of Bulgaria head coach Silvano Prandi showed a superiority in attack (55 to 31 percent) and receiving (67 to 38 percent), with 10 aces and seven blocks exacting 27 errors by their adversaries.
Knowing a spot in the third round was assured, both teams altered their starting lineups from their respective first match of Pool N. Bulgaria had five new starters as they rested offensive threats Vladimir Nikolov (67 points in tournament) and Matey Kaziyski (60 points). Brazil featured three new players including their star captain Giba and Theo at setter in place of a sick Bruno, who moved into the Brazil starting lineup when Marlon became unavailable at the start of the tournament due to illness.
Bulgaria snapped a five-match losing streak to Brazil, including four losses in this year's FIVB World League. Brazil still holds a commanding 25-13 all-time record against Bulgaria and has won eight of the 13 World Championship matches.
Bulgaria made a good showing at the start of the match with a Sokolov attack that was very effective. Brazil worked hard to rack-up points at the start of the match but seemed to be swimming upstream. The green and white found an open path with five aces and two blocks from a Brazil that showed no resistance down the stretch of a 25-18 first set.
Giba and his teammates seemed to be more precise in the second set, but the Bulgarian Sokolov narrowed the gap with his serving (7-7), Brazil's Vissotto took a long stride leading 12-9, but the match doesn't take-off and Bulgaria pulls ahead 16-15. An ace by Konstantin Mitev gave another three points to the green & white jersey at 21-18 and Bulgaria went on to win the set 25-20.
The third set continued down the same one-way street with a Bulgaria who showed up their counterparts in every aspects of the game - blocking, serving, spiking. Brazil tried to come back and narrowed the gap to two points at 22-20, but Bulgaria's Valentin Brateov closed the match 25-20 in a mere 69 minutes.
Weird results:
Bulgaria 1 x 3 Czech
USA 0 x 3 Czech
Cuba 1 x 3 Serbia
Brazil 0 x 3 Bulgaria
Russia 2 x 3 Spain
France 1 x 3 Argentina
Italy is not on this list because the FIVB had already eased its way. Before coursing at the Brazilian team, people should take a look and see the results above and see that they were not the only ones to participate in this farce. It's a shame Brazilian team did it, specially because they don't need to. They are the best.Last 27 championships-21 titles!!!

Bulgaria was not playing with their best players, so why do you blame us brazilians? We should have won FOR WHAT? Theres no need to win... just if you are dumb and want to risk your championship playing against strong teams without your best players (Bruno and Marlon were sick)... plus spend energy in a longer traveling. We already demonstrated that WE ARE THE B-E-S-T. So, NOBODY can make us a fool. I hope ITALY will lost and the whole world will see that this manipulation doesnt worth.
