Awesome Games Done Quick was a speed run marathon done by a group of 50 or so of us from SpeedDemosArchive (SDA) in an effort to raise money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation, a charity devoted to, as expected, fighting cancer by stopping it before it takes effect. This took place from January 6th through January 11th in Chevy Chase, MD, with nonstop back-to-back speed runs streamed live online during the entire duration of the marathon. Our very generous donors helped us raise over $53,000 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation! Thank you so much for all of you who supported this run either by watching or donating (or watching recorded runs such as this one)! We could not have done it without you all!

I also want to give a shoutout to everybody at SDA who helped upload the marathon vids so soon after the marathon's completion. That is a colossal effort! The vids look great though, and I stole this video from the master list (http://speeddemosarchive.com/marathon/schedule/) for some shameless promotion. :P Thanks guys!

Battletoads is an amazing game. It truly was a pleasure to play this game with/against Emptyeye at the marathon. I hope others enjoy it as much as I did. A quick note, the first deaths on Level 8 and Level 9 are intentional, but the rest of them are most definitely not intentional. Haha. I got extremely lucky with the Rat Boot, despite setting it up correctly. Really, I just got really lucky in a lot of different places. Emptyeye had a very good run too, including a very difficult Rat Boot as well! His set up is far more difficult than mine is, but he still managed it live. Very impressive.

I am controlling the yellow toad in this race (left screen), and Emptyeye is controlling the green toad (right screen). He is the one wearing the cape (left on couch), and I am the one with the amateur beard (right on couch).

I need to give a huge shoutout to kareshi on piano. He did an excellent job keeping up with us during the race, and he sounded great! Also, his final boss music was surprisingly good...that statement is more true than it seems. ;)

As with Color a Dinosaur, I'll do a quick roll call for those curious. Kareshi is obviously on piano, puwexil is next to him turning the pages, Josh the funkdoc is leaning on the left side of the couch, Emptyeye is on the left side of the couch, PJ (me!) is in the middle of the couch, and UltraJMan (I think?) is on the right side. Standing, and along the back wall from left to right, we see Breakdown, Feasel (at some points...he is the one in burgundy standing next to Breakdown), Sir VG behind his camera, Sinister1 behind him in the red shirt, and romscout, neskamikaze, and pootrain in the chairs.

Enjoy!

  • This is one of the best things the SDA marathons have ever done.

  • @DarkKobo1d

Haha thanks! I am very flattered. I don't think I agree, though. The marathons are so amazing in general that it's hard to single out just one performance. SGDQ was incredibly fun to watch, too! I'd put theseawolf1's Demon's Crest run above this for sure. ^_^

The marathons are really spectacular. There are so many great performances!

  • Is it really faster to take the ice zone warp instead of the turbo tunnel warp? I'm sure you guys have tested this...but it seems the surf level would been shorter...(or did you just want to give the pianist a different track to play?)

  • @Ialliac

I actually just timed it a few days ago. They are more or less the same time if you have perfect execution and luck on both levels. There is a lot more randomness in level 5 (the mines!), and sometimes Blag doesn't want to cooperate, so I always go for level 4. My execution on that level is pretty solid normally, so it just makes things much more reliable.

  • Nice video/run.

I would do a Batlemaniacs side by side if that was at all possible. would be fun.

  • @Vatchern

That would be pretty neat. I have lost a lot of interest in that game though, sadly. I tried to improve my old speed run and was just not enjoying the game at all. It's just so slow; it feels like I'm fighting the controls with every action. Sometimes attacks don't register at all, sometimes aerial attacks take like 6 seconds instead of 1-2, and sometimes my jump doesn't register. It's pretty frustrating.

  • Awesome race guys, looks like everyone had a good time!

  • @TheSuperSNES

    Mmm... I see

but don't worry, you almost beat the game twice, while SirVG only 1 xD

  • @mondruner

Haha. Well...I play on an HD TV here at home. And I brought that TV to the marathon and used it for my practice. But then I played on a standard-def TV for the race, so I was used to input delay and there wasn't any. I was trying to "buffer" some of my jumps before I landed or during a hit (which works on my TV), but when there's no input delay it just won't register the jump. It didn't occur to me that this was the problem until after the race. Oops!

  • yeah xD

I can't find actraiser speedrun in youtube, but I found it in SDA... your speedrun is superior, but then...what happened there? :-(
