On the 10th anniversary of the Oct., 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, we visit the actual epicenter for the first time. Recent (for 1999) portable consumer GPS equipment reveals the site is a 90 minute hike past a marker erected on what was thought to have been the epicenter ten years before. (Note for copyright info: I was the reporter/producer of this report.)
I was in San Jose, My one ton van w/ trailer was up and down and all around, I wrote off my '53 Porsche and59 Vette as I staggard out of my shop. But they made it! My parents, in La Selva Beach, brick home was hurt. Built in c.1930. Repaired. Brother in Watsonville home was knocked off the foundation. Friends near Skyline/Bear Creek road had some wild stuff. One van bounced so hard it blew the beads off all four tires, twisted up a Welded on roof rack. "It was like the Exorcist" was common

No, the original sign is still there. As for my business card stuck in a pencil? Who knows? I haven't been back since that 1999 report and no one ever contacted me to tell me they saw it. The 20th anniversary walk this Saturday will go to the original sign. It's a long hike to the actual epicenter, but mostly flat.
