So after I did the Diva Cup review video. I realized that there are a couple more things you can do to be a sustainable 'gal' with regards to hygeine and beauty. Just looking around my apartment I found a couple neat things you can do.

First of all this is just your typical stick of deodorant, just a no name brand. It's almost empty and it's garbage right? The whole thing goes in the garbage. That's a lot of packaging. That ends up costing a lot over time especially if you buy the fancy brand name kind. I'm going to say something today that will save packaging and save you money. I found this on a random blog. She found out that baking soda is good for absorbing sweat and smell.

Well, most people already know that it absorsbs smell. She realized, though, that it itches her. So the perfect combination she found is 6 parts cornstarch and 1 part baking soda. I just use tablespoons. You can get cornstarch in bulk really cheap at Bulk Barn or wherever. Just mix it all together and you get the powder that you just put on with a powder puff (or even just tissue) like you would your powder foundation or whatever.

It's really good it absorbs the smell and it doesn't itch. It's really awesome for people that have allergies or sensitive skin. It's also dirt cheap. I didn't calculate the cost but it's probably like 10 cents for a big batch or something. That's really good for students and frugal people.

Anyway. Another neat thing that you can do is use spray hair spray. Aerosol degrades the ozone layer blah blah blah. But if you have these little travel size ones with the pump spray you can refill them with your bigger pump spray bottle. That saves on packaging instead of buying a new travel size one and saves you a bit of money.

If you like make up and stuff, one last thing you can do is get transformer. Liquid transformer. It's just a drop bottle, get a nice angle brush. What you do is take any colour of compact colour eyeshadow (powder). Put in maybe one drop of the transformer into your eyeshoadow and just mix it in. This won't damage it at all, it'll just dry out. Then you have nice liquid liner of any colour powder shadow you have. So you save on packaging from not buying liquid liner, and save money.

So those are three ways you can save money, still look hot, and reduce waste. And that's it!

  • i wont to try it, but doesnt it get powder all over your clothes? like.... a black dress or shirt?

  • Well if you won't try this there are alternative roll on type things or crystals... I haven't tried those but they are better than buying a piece of plastic that bigger than the product...

If you put the powder before the clothes you are fine. It doesn't stain. If power does end up on your clothes, you can just brush it off, unlike stick deodorant.

Another good thing is that it absorbs moisture which is the source of the smell.

  • oh im sorry, i meant want, not wont... lol i hate typos :)

  • Oh well, I guess my answer is still the same! Yes a little bit, but once you brush it off it's fine.

  • haha thanks! ill definatley try it now! thank you for posting! :)

  • let me know how it works out or if you find any other tips and tricks!

  • can i use this in my face?

  • @emsieixor to both of you; wet a washcloth or corner of a towel with water and you can just wipe off the powder excess with it. Voila!

  • YES! You can use water instead of investing in that transformer stuff for liquid eyeliner. A trick I have been using for years. Good luck Earth Mamas!

  • O_o that's the same eyeshadow I use, except i just get my angled brush wet in the sink.... ;D

  • You can also use baking soda as part of your hair care routine. What I did is went about 2 weeks without washing my hair. It got really gross, but I rinsed it with water REALLY well every few days and wore hats/bandanas/scarves in my hair. So, mix a little baking soda with a little water, & massage the thick liquid into your scalp all over. Rinse REALLY well. Mix apple cider vinegar w/ a little water & pour over the ends of your hair. Rinse it out really well. Voila--clean hair!

  • I put coconut oil (you can use any oil really--olive, etc) on and then pat the baking soda on. Thanks for the powder puff idea--I've just been using my hands and spilling baking soda everywhere!

Baking soda is great for cleaning (as is vinegar diluted with water), and you can also add some essential oils (a few drops) to it and sprinkle it on your carpet instead of that smell-good powder you buy at the store!

  • @jharsika Yeah I use crystal deodorant and it works pretty good. XD

  • I use the crystal and it is awesome. But it is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant

  • Yay for sustainability :)
