It dates back to Biblical times, long before there was islam. The Jews don't eat pork for the same reason. Pigs were considered "unclean" because wild pigs can carry bacteria and parasites which can cause several diseases, trichinosis and brucellosis to name just two. People at them and they got sick. Both diseases in their worst presentations can be fatal. Also, pigs, because the lack sweat glands, cool off in muddy water so they are dirty and smelly animals

Most pigs come out at night so the dogs help find them in daylight. A 22.250 might work but I've seen people try with a .223 and have to put a few into them before they went down so i say GO BIGGER. The hunts I've been on the animals are taken humanely and a couple of times I've even seen them take out a dog and get away. As for being left to die I can tell you every animal we take is put down fast and most of the meat donated to non profits.
