I like the concept. Children enjoy success!
Like other posters, I agree that changing the names of the piles. I also like the idea of a, "close but no cigar" pile. This gives a sense of hope.

I'll begin teaching my nephew how to read next week.. and I like this approach with the cards. It is something that is very simple to relate to, and it shows clearly when we are getting something right and when we need to practice more. And when it is done, you will have a "big pile of succes" which is awesome :-)

I'm learning foreign languages and I use flashcards a lot. However, I use them in a slightly different way. I take one hundred or more flashcards at a time, then I split them into five or six piles. After that I go through them just like you did but if I get one wrong I shuffle the piles and start from the beginning until I can successfully identify every word. (I repeat this process a few times to make sure I really know the material).

Instead of saying "good" or "bad" pile it would be a more positive thing to say correct or incorrect that way the child dosn't think that they are bad for mission the card.
