Bob Sheppard (10/20/2010-7/11/2010), voice of Yankee Stadium for 57 seasons delivered his longest group of introductions on 4/15/1976 when the refurbished Yankee Stadium was opened. This is Part 1 of 3 videos. Written by then Yankee PR director Marty Appel, listen to Bob introduce Billy Martin for the first time as NYY manager along with other Yankee greats on this star-studded opener.

Bob was a genuinely admirable human being and a gentleman of the old school who represented a bygone era of aspiration and dignity. The sacred eloquence that Bob's work represented and epitomized has now officially past. He was a credit to his faith, his family, his friends, and to sports. He possessed unrivaled character, integrity, courage, and class. How lucky I was to even know this exceptional man since his sterling influence on my life echoed through to my very heart and soul. I shall miss him terribly. We shall all miss the magnificent Robert Leo Sheppard.

Thank you Sheppard fans!!

  • This was telecast over WPIX Channel 11 in New York City. The complete game doesn't not exist on video (only clips). An audio recording of the game's radiocast aired over WMCA-AM does exist.

  • I was there.

  • This is great! I was born on this very day.

  • THe yankees are the reason why Old-Timers day is around today.

  • Had he lived, Ruth would have been 81. What a hoot if only he could have been here for this! Very sweet moment to see Mrs. Ruth & Mrs. Gehrig present.

  • @dzanier Damn straight! I'm glad my Dad did'nt live to see Yankee Stadium get taken away from us fans. It would have broken his heart like it did mine.

  • The new Yankee Stadium is not and never will be the home of the Yankees. Yankee Stadium, sadly, has died. It is as close to sacrilege as you'll ever see in professional sports. It is sad that this shrine no longer exists.

  • You need to fix the dates of his Bob Sheppard's birthday in the description to 10/20/1910. Just a heads up.

  • i'll take this stadium, the way it looked on this day (no advertisements etc..), over any stadium ever built. i'll always say it i don't care the new stadium on it's best day could never even come close that's why i'll never go. it makes me sick just to drive on the deegan now and look at the empty space.

  • Boy, this brings back memories. I was at this game with my Uncle and cousins.

  • These three clips on the Stadium's reopening in 76 are a GEM!! Thank you!!
