I want to Vanish

It's been a long while since my last Costello song and absence makes the heart grow fonder. Taken from 'All this Useless Beauty' and also covered by June Tabor and Ann Sofie Von Otter, this song has a mood of despair and resignation that is hard to find comparison with, such is the depth of descent implied. The surface theme records the resurgence in popularity of an aging 1930s folk singer who no longer craves recognition and wishes only to be left to enjoy a content and ordinary existence. In these days where the cult of celebrity holds sway, it's a timely reminder that your 15 minutes comes at a price. EC admits in his 'Bespoke Songs, Lost Dogs ....' sleeve notes that the starkness of some lines allude towards the darker places he was frequenting at the time. I leave you to go there if you wish .......

Wow! It would be great to get some new Elvis out there. There's so much great music he's written that doesn't seem to be on YT. I love any solo live footage you've got. I love the Bacharach stuff he did and the Steve Nieve/EC 5 CD album. Really glad to have made your acquaintance Deb. It would be amazing to have June Tabor's 'Vanish' up. Certainly different Navim. Very difficult to sing with all those twists and turns in the melody. I had to listen three times straight off to get it - I did and I loveit. Very well done indeed. Bob

@bobtulip48 Thanks for commenting Bob. Some Elvis Costello songs are a real challenge. You're right, this one is hard to pitch in places. The melody moves around a bit. Worth persevering with though! One of my favourites. Glad you liked it.

Now that I've finally got it down, howzabout I upload Ms. Tabor's version? Chances are at leasy one of our countries will permit viewing and we'll be able to share it with others. By the way, I believe I have just about every piece of recorded Elvis there is. Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to upload. (I'll need a little time to get to that compilation of covers, but it's on the way..) We're snowed in over here now, btw. More than 2 feet just in time for the kiddies' vaca week.
