This documentary program aired on TV Ontario under the title of Too Good to be True. It's the story of Avro Canada's Jetliner, the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter, and the designer Jim Floyd. The narrator of the introduction is Elwy Yost, a fixture for many years as host of TVO's Saturday Night at the Movies, and besides being a movie buff, he also worked at Avro for several years in Human Resources. He was one of the last employees after "Black Friday" in 1959 when the Arrow project was cancelled, and the company went under.
Just seen this for the first time, What an incredible aircraft. And then it dawned on me it was TSR2 all over again. Two world beating aircraft way ahead of their times and killed by short sighted politicians and Wheeler Dealers in the government sponsored US aviation industry. And isn't it a telling similarity that both the Canadian and UK governments ordered the total destruction of all airframes, parts, jigs and drawings. Luckily some people hid TSR2 airframes and they still exist in Museums.

I think it was the politicians, really. Whether Canadian or American, the so-called 'public servants' will destroy promising programs like this because they can't see past the next election. They don't know what they want, and they'll either break your heart or some other part of your anatomy!

No, it was Diefenbaker that was responsible for this. The short-sighted, unthinking bureaucrat. Blame him. It was bad enough he cancelled this....but to cut up and dispose of the evidence was an absolute crime. I wasn't born yet....but it makes me want to dig him up and piss in his coffin. The whole sordid thing makes me want to cry.

The only flaw of the aircraft found by the testpilot was the positioning of two switches and he wanted a clock to be back in time for lunch. Great phrase from a great testpilot about a great plane!
