Flatt and Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys are my favorite Bluegrass group. This is a beautiful Bluegrass gospel song that features Earl Scruggs playing lead guitar instead of his usual 5 string.

You can buy DVDs of their old Martha White Grand Ole Opry shows. There are currently 6 of them. Go to http://earlscruggs.com, click on Merchandise, and scroll down the list. I am not associated with the DVDs, Flatt and Scruggs, or that website, just a long-time huge fan.

  • A Question: I've noticed a reference here on YouTube to a tradition of not playing violin or banjo on gospel tunes. As you can see here only Mr. Flatt is playing the guitar. I've Googled and tried to locate another reference to where the tradition came from but can't find anything. Do any of you know? Thanks in advance! The Martha White commerical is over time to get back to T. Tommy and the Boys!

  • @MsDarkblade Actually, Earl plays the banjo on several of the Flatt and Scruggs gospel songs. And on this one, he makes the guitar sound as "happy" as his banjo. This is a happy hymn with a joyful message, and any instruments would sound just fine. "Make a joyful sound unto the Lord." I have never heard that the fiddle and banjo are not considered acceptable. Hope I did not say that. By the way, that is Earl playing the guitar.

  • I can't believe that I live here in Chatsworth, Georgia and can't find a single bluegrass station on the radio! Best I can do is the very rare bluegrass gospel song on the station out of Jasper. Thank goodness I can find wonderful music here thanks to people like you!

  • @kjohns2001 There is a lot of bluegrass on youtube. I suggest you get really good speakers for your computer, if you do not have them already, and then make a playlist here on youtube of a lot of the great bluegrass artists and songs.

Also, you can find bluegrass radio stations online. Try pandora.com and create a bluegrass station. Free.

  • The reason I posted this is I just love Earl's guitar picking on this. Amazing!

  • These 5 men, with a guitar, bass, and a song that has the same lines repeated over and over are still a million times better than anything I have heard on the radio playing in this day and age.

  • Thanks for posting. I love watching Curly Seckler sing.

  • The group that changed bluegrass music forever with Earl Scruggs banjo style. They always provided great listening and I enjoyed seeing them on the Beverly Hillbillies every once in a while. I always thought that Lester Flatt had a perfect name because about 50% of the time he was singing just a little flat.

  • Oh my, Earl's amazing on that Martin!
