On July 28, 2009, the Maliki government of Iraq, attacked the unarmed and defenseless members of Iran's largest democratic opposition the People's Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in Ashraf, Iraq. As a proxy for Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei, Maliki ordered members of the 9th Badr Brigade (created by Iran's Revolutionary Guard on the orders of Khomeini) to attack Ashraf, killing 13 people and wounding nearly 500. 36 members of the PMOI were taken hostage. The PMOI in Ashraf are regarded as "protected persons" under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Protestors on hunger strike across the globe are demanding that Ashraf's protection be returned to Coalition forces, withdrawal of Iraqi forces, the immediate release of those kidnapped, and an end to a 6 month seige that has prevented food and medicine from entering Ashraf.
