s2000 cold start noise

here's another clip from the interior. only occurs during a cold start and after that, it's fine all day.

yea, never fixed it. it's been .... wow.... about 2-3 years now. the noise still occurs randomly during cold starts on cold mornings. it's fine on warm days and warm starts. definitely not the timing chain tensioner. it sounds like a starter problem (like the grinding noise when you start the car when it's already on) and no i'm not keeping the key in too long. but besides the 1 sec noise at startup, it still runs like a dream.

@bastec666 the only reason they put 10w-30 in the s2000 is so it dosent burn as fast. we rev up to 9k, you 8,5k and most oil cant stand it and burns, like mobile one. but for colder temps it is NEEDED that you put 0w-30 or 5w-30, if you dont you may end up with your vtec not working or your engine goes bad because of starvation on oil. when you change the oil the start up sound goes away. i did it for a fact 02 70kmiles ATM/ i pmed you some links and its not bad to change weights

@GDanielCho I hate to do it but I call bullshit. I got my s2000 last summer and this summer is almost over. We had temps here of 5 degrees and I used 10w30 all year round and never have this problem (06 s2k with 70k miles).

DO NOT put 5w30 in your s2k. There is a reason they chose 10w30 as the standard and not 5w30. Putting in a different weight will cause damage (either way you go, up or down the scale, changing weight is BAD).

its your type of oil go to s2k.i. .c_o_m and use search bar, your using 10w-30 huh? for colder temp areas use 5w-30 or 0w-30

@tooflys2k Currently having the same problem with my 2008 Honda Accord, only on cold starts sounds like it grinds on something for a second and then off to normal, won't do it again until it sits over night.

Id say the starter isnt meshing properly and the throw out gear is sticking in the ring gear for a second or 2 before retracting, either try shimming the starter motor or get a new 1, flywheel teeth might be unhappy but as you say its still going 2-3 years later id say starter. It probably goes away when its warm because metal expands once hot.
