It was not immediately known if there were casualties on the Spanair flight which media reports said had caught fire.
An emergency services spokesman, quoted by Spanish national radio, said the plane had been attempting an emergency landing just after taking off from the airport.
Eleven fire trucks were at the scene.
A spokesman for the fire service at Madrid's Barajas airport said the plane had a capacity of 166 passengers.
Spanair is Spain's second biggest airline after Iberia and is a subsidiary of Scandinavian carrier SAS.

Al menos 150 personas han muerto y 27 han resultado heridas (19 muy graves) tras el accidente de un avión de Spanair (vuelo JK5022) con 166 pasajeros a bordo y dirección a Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. El avión ha despegado y ha ascendido unos metros antes de precipitarse, cerca de las 14.45. El vuelo ha salido con una hora de retraso por problemas técnicos, según confirma la propia aerolínea. El accidente se ha producido más o menos a un kilómetro de la Terminal 4, en la Pista 36, la más apartada y conocida como 'La Isla'. El incendio provocado por el accidente ha quedado prácticamente extinguido minutos después de las 17.00.

Now that is a biased comment if I ever saw one.

It only may have turned out fine after they spent several millions re-engineering it. Like the infamous DC-10.

"Better than all CONTEMPORARY European aircraft".. Yep, that's why everybody is so incredibly stupid to phase out their MD80's around the world, because they should listen to your great wisdom and expertise.

Boeing made MD go out of business, so what's your problem? It's in the past now. Over.

I am from Gran Canaria (destiny of the flight this horrible day) we lost so much people from here and one School of the north lost 12 kids. Was horrible and the state (president and crew) didnt do anything to fix the situation. The company "Spanair" evode the evidences to lie and cover them backs to being not judge... sad...THE REAL SITUATION DAY TODAY IS: The people have not a real reason to explain the accident...
