I think I read that Peter had musical experience as well (folk music, I believe).

To my knowledge Michael Nesmith was the only Monkee that actually HAD musical experience when their band was first formed. I found that extremely hard to believe but I guess sometimes things are not always what they seem. Michael Nesmith received the least number of votes in an old Monkees popularity contest, but he has always been my favourite. Sure enough Davy Jones received the highest number of votes.
