Good show, good presentation. And better use of the camera than most taiko posts. We usually get to listen and watch taiko clear across a gymnasium floor or something similar.
I have never actually heard a Taiko drum in person, but I bet this video does no justice. Nothing like hearing em in the flesh! Wish I could have been there to feel the vibrations!
Traditional taiko are made from a hollowed out tree, and slowly dried to avoid cracking. This can take years for the largest drums, and it's difficult to find a large fallen tree in the right condition. Modern wine-barrel taiko are obviously easier to source but still require a lot of handmaking work. Essentially the cost is in the craftsmanship. Although recently, even Pearl has released a few smaller-sized taiko.
