Sting performs a short set at a Gala Dinner in honour of murdered Australian heart surgeon Victor Chang, to support the late doctor's Cardiac Research Institute. Also present is Diana, Princess of Wales.
Held at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney on Thursday, 31st October 1996, and hosted by Mike Munro, the event was broadcast on the Nine Network as "An Evening with Diana, Princess of Wales, at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Dinner".
Sting is introduced by Munro before performing "Fields of Gold" and "Every Breath You Take". He then makes his apologies and leaves the stage to travel to the nearby State Theatre where he was performing that night as part of the Australian leg of his Mercury Falling tour. On the way he stops briefly to chat with Diana, and to be accosted by Nine journo Jennifer Keyte on the red carpet, before making his exit.
The musicians are Dominic Miller on guitar, Kenny Kirkland on keyboards (balanced on his knee!) and - although it's a little hard to tell - I'm assuming Vinnie Colaiuta on drums.
I was fortunate enough to see Sting two nights later at the Entertainment Centre in Newcastle.
[Apologies for the poor video quality and fluctuating audio, which are due to the degradation of the original VHS tape.]
