Well, there was a 1990 episode ("Good News, Bad News") of Full House in which D.J. hired Kimmy as a school newspaper writer, only to fire her due to Kimmy bungling the sports assignment she was supposed to cover.
Maybe the writer remembered that commercial when that particular episode was being written (or Andrea suggested the storyline).
