Thanks. We are shooting the finished product this Wednesday. (12-9-09) I'll post some new shots of the finished piece soon and have the edited video up around the end of January if all goes as planned.

is the hidden drawer locked if the mechanism isn't engaged?

Yeah, the hidden drawer is locked in the cabinet by a bolt that the rope is connected to. When the "popped out" knob is pushed back into the cabinet, it releases the bolt allowing the hidden drawer to pop out. Otherwise, when the bolt is in place, it can not be opened. I will have technical drawings of the whole thing posted on the new website when we put it online in 4-5 weeks.
