  • @airraidband I wasn't really thinking about religion. It may be that some sort of belief in God or Purpose emerges naturally in the psyche. It's an unpleasant hypothesis but, perhaps we have a natural survival mechanism of self delusion. As mainstream religions retreat, new age religions spring up. Why are humans so reluctant to give up faith?

Religion has underpinned society for centuries, there may be a deeper cause for that than just a system of control based on lies.

  • @MrLittletomdj There are several flaws with your theory. First off, christianity states that everybody is already destined to go to hell, so why would they care what they do? Their already going to hell, so that's not a deterrent. Also, nothing good can ever come from a lie. Just because people get a positive response from prayer doesn't mean that they aren't just talking to themselves out loud. Religion only brings pain

  • Ohh 1st comment, best make it controversial!

Ed mentioned the concept of God being a "survaval mechanism". I've been thinking about this & I think their may be some truth to it.

*The placebo effect of prayer & belief in Purpose.

*The idea that purpose reinfoces your reason for living in conjuncture with fear of death.

*The sway towards positive actions from fear of hell & consequence.

I don't consider these things to be positive attributes of Religion but, perhaps they are innate in our psyche?
