McWhorter Opening Remarks

The kind of affirmative action which remedies past wrongs is fine, but the kind which allows minorities into schools according to lower standards out of a sense that they contribute to a diversity tableau is wrong. Affirmative action was good when it was first instituted, but the idea was not to keep it around until life was perfect because that will never happen. If you set the bar low, then that is the kind of performance you will get. Also, there is no evidence that the existence of minority students improves education for all students.
