How do we know the universe is expanding? I know we think we are observing the Doppler effect, but what if the red-shift is actually cause by something else? The cosmic background radiation also experiences this observable red-shift, right? I'm thinking that maybe when light (or any electromagnetic wave) travels such far distances, it is effected somehow. Shouldn't we experience a blue-shift for light sources moving towards us? Has such a blue shift been observed?
