Exquisite Corpse 1 (2009)

This video was created in collaboration with my friend Brent (aka Pete Samples) the beginning of February 2009. It was produced for a sound design and cinema class that we took together. The video was supposed to illustrate a wide variety of audio-visual relationships as explored in Michel Chion's book, Audio-Vision: Sound On Screen.

Because of time constraints and common desires to not have to complete the project while holding hands, Brent and I decided to develop an exquisite corpse type of game in order to bring this project to fruition. We each chose two films that we wanted to take footage from and pulled about 3 minutes from each film. We then separated the audio and video from each film. From these (4) tracks, we each chose an audio track and a video track to give to one another. Thus we each had 2 audio tracks and 2 video tracks to work with, but neither of us had audio that matched the video. A point of interest is that we had each chosen one obscure film and one obvious one so that in our exchange we ended up each having a video track from a film we had never seen before. Our task then was to edit these disassociated tracks together in whatever way we thought interesting.

In the end, we came together, Brent with two 1min. videos and myself with one 2min. video, and simply put the videos together back to back (hence the black between segments.) So in the video, the first and last segments were made by Brent while my segment is sandwiched in the middle.
