There is much controversy around when to talk to kids about the birds and the bees, but most agree that the first talk should come from a parent. Get a few different opinions from other moms in this video on raising children.

  • There is always a way to answer any question the child may ask... you can take very 'adult' topics and tell them the answer in a way children can understand. I always answer all questions my kids ask me..no matter how 'scary' or adult the topic. They understand and, at least I am able to give them one of their first impressions of the topic, which is good. I just hate when parents say 'You're too young for that'... if they ask, they are not too young to know the answer, in my opinion.

  • High school is when that class gets interesting

  • Let me say this had I KNOWN what Sex was my sexual abuser would had faced more serious consequences for his actions but since I didn't get "the talk" until I was in 5th grade I was horrified that that's what my abuser had done to me not just rubbed me with his privates...then he would have been punished more so, he was a 6th grader I was a 2nd grader, he must have had the talk but not told that it was something for marriage or something u dont do to just anybody...remember kids r on youtube ;-)

  • hahha i would just telll my kids the open truth, no lies! mommy and daddy had sex and you were born xD then id explain sex :P

  • HMPH I had to find put by my self I never even heard of birds and the bees

  • Ok y'all need to know that they talk about "the sperm" and stuff in 6th grade, and if a girl doesn't know about periods by 5th grade that is sad. I had my period at the time of that talk at school.

  • I'm not a parent......and hopefully won't be one anytime soon. But I think, with a girl, she should learn about the birds and the bees when she gets her period.

  • The birds and the bees, really? Why do they call it that way?And it isn't supposed to be tabou?

  • You make some great points! However, you need to tell them the whole deal before they get to the "ew gross" phase - which starts at 7 or so. Parents should initiate these conversations - kids don't know what they need to know. It's important to establish yourself as a trustworthy resource early, so they will come to you with their questions.

All this avoiding only serves you, not them. Think about what your early sex life would have been like if you'd had lots of info from your parent.

  • I think that you should tell a kid before he/she gets to the point where they're not going to want to sit down and talk about it, like 11-13. I think 8-10 is a good age.
