On dairy farms cows are kept in either tie stalls or free stalls. In tie stalls they are chained for their entire lives and milked in the stall. In free stalls the cows go to a milking parlour. They may or may not have access to the outdoors. Calves are taken away from moms at 1 to 2 days after birth. Approx. 50% are male and most are kept in veal crates - chained for months. Females are bred a few time and when milk production goes down she is sent for slaughter.
