September 16, 1916 - December 11, 2004) was a renowned Carnatic vocalist. She was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor.
M.S.Subbulakhsmi was born to Shanmukhavadivu (Veena Vidwan) and Subramaniya Iyer on 16 Sep,1916 in a musical family, in the temple town of Madurai situated in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. M.S. started learning Carnatic music from a very early age and released her first recording at the age of 10. She then began her Carnatic classical music training under Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and then Hindustani classical training under Pandit Narayan Rao Vyas. Her first public performance was during the Mahamaham festival at Kumbakonam. Then, she performed countless musical forms in different languages such as Hindi, Bengali , Gujarati , Marathi, Tamil , Malayalam, Telugu , Sanskrit and Kannada.
Subbulakshmi had participated in music concerts all over the world, but her participation in the concerts at New York in 1970,London in 1982 and Moscow in 1987 had a special significance in her life.17 January,2001 was a very important day in karnatak classical music when M.S.Subbulakshmi was given a national award by Ramaseva Mandal in bangaluru. She was the first woman who recived this prestigious award.
We are hearing the beautiful voice of MS Subbulakshmi.
11/12/2004 was a sad day for indian music but we all remember her for ever. I am very happy to make this video. These Songs very old recording and beautifull. I thought it is the right choise to remember her for ever. If there is any objection to these songs please say so I will be very sad, but immediately remove these songs. I hope M S family members will permit these songs.

I'm an Australian of Latvian parentage, who fell in love with India's culture just over twenty years ago now, and this is an example of why I am still smitten. One of these days I'm going to get to touch the dust of this sacred land in person. To the land which has borne so many saintly beings, and blessed by the touch of Buddha's feet, I pay my respects - namaste.

Anyway I donno why the comparison between Amma and Lata bai. Lata bai was asked who is her first inspiration, her answer was MS Subbulakshmi and said that when she started singing for film, she recalled how MS did in Meera and simple imitated her in her first film song.

Lata bai also says she an ardent devotee of MS amma (hahah)

And by the way, do you mean MS amma is only good in alapana and tanam then for your info MS amma is a trained Hindustani singer, she brought the two genres of Indian Classical Music close to each other as she kept the knowledge of both, this is not what I'm saying, it's Pt. Jasraj.

ohhh so you mean Lata is a Hindustani musician? Hahah good joke :P Dude, her father was a hindustani musician, Lata only learnt from him and sang for films and other light genre for money, she wouldn't certainly make this much money if she would be giving only concerts.

I am surprised Shravan, that a man so in touch with passion could misunderstand my love. Peace. Good Karma to you.

you seem idiotic with your comments. Lata is no where near that Divine Lady. Get lost you kanta laga fool. Lata was a money minded brat (Go and learn her idiocrisy that lead to her cold war with Rafi, she was too pathetic and the reason for war was even more pathetic). Dont compare amma with that greedy nincompoops.
