HRC came together as a result of some jam sessions based on tunes most jazz musicians have in common. These songs have long been the basis of impromptu performances, often by musicians playing together for the first time. Following the lead of the Bill Evans Trio, we found focusing on a finite number of well known tunes allowed us to explore and develop performance practices beyond the traditional roles of our instruments. This isn't new territory, but the freedom afforded by the material invites the performance to be listenable, changeable and intensely personal.
