Sichuan University (SCU),established in 1896 is one of the national key universities directly
under the Ministry of Education (MOE) in China and one of the state "211 Project" and "985
Project" universities receiving privileged government support in the Ninth Five-Year Plan
period.

Project 211" is a project of 106 (as of 2007) Key universities and colleges in the 21st
century initiated in 1995 by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.

On May 4, 1998, then-President Jiang Zemin declared that "China must have a number of
first-rate universities of international advanced level", so Project 985 was begun. There are
only 39 top universities in Project 985 out of about 3000 universities in China.

Sichuan University (SCU), as it is now, is the result of a merge of three key national
universities. In 1994, the original Sichuan University merged with the Chengdu University of
Science and Technology (CUST), a national university under the Ministry of Education. In
2000, Sichuan University merged with the world famous West China University of Medical
Sciences (WCUMS), a key medical university , under the Ministry of Health.

"At present, SCU has the widest coverage of disciplines and the largest scale of operation in
West China.

There are 37 key disciplines at the national level, 14 "211 Project" key disciplines, 66 key
disciplines at the provincial and ministerial level, 6 national bases for personnel training in
basic disciplines and scientific research, and a teaching base for engineering courses.
Besides, it has 27 first-class disciplines to grant Doctor's degree and Master's degree, 228
second-class disciplines to grant Doctor's degree, 345 Master programs, 9 specialized
degree programs, and 26 post-doctor stations.

The 121 bachelor programs cover the major fields in liberal arts, sciences, engineering,
medicine and agriculture. SCU has more than 70 thousand students others are in the
application process .

Sichuan University has established friendly cooperative ties with over 100 universities and
research institutes from over 30 countries and regions. They include American Harvard
University, Princeton University, Yale University, Washington University, Chandler
Medical Center, Kentucky University in America, London University, University of
Leicester in England, University of Toronto in Canada, Latrobe University in Australia,
