"The characters rousing get happy anthem titled Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy, was written by Charlie Brissette, John Kricfalusi, and Christopher Reccardi. A cover of this song, performed by Wax, is included on the 1995 tribute album Saturday Morning: Cartoons' Greatest Hits, produced by Ralph Sall for MCA Records.

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy is sung by a character named Stinky Wizzleteats who is a parody of Burl Ives. Several references to famous songs and movie quotes are sprinkled through the song giving it its surreal air including: * "This is a song about a whale" - "The Whale" Burl Ives Sings Little White Duck and Other Children's Favorites * "I'll teach your grandmother to suck eggs!", "If'n you ain't the grandaddy of all liars", "I told you I'd shoot, but you didn't believe me, why wouldn't you believe me?" - The Big Country lines spoken by (or paraphrased from) his character Rufus Hannassey * "The little creatures of nature, they don't know they're ugly" - Ives' intro to the song "The Ugly Bug Ball" from Disney's Summer Magic (1963) * "That's very funny, a fly marrying a bumblebee" - from "Mother Goose Songs Burl Ives Sings Little White Duck and Other Children's Favorites * The record cover Stimpy pulls the record from has a character on the front that has a similar face and Van Dyke beard as Burl Ives."

  • great video! I don;t know if anyone mentioned this, but in the original script for the episode, it actually mentioned Burl Ives by name. John K just improvised the name Stinky Whizzleteats during recording. Or so the story goes, anyways

  • @DinosaurCop

    Awesome!

  • Thanks, Adam... by the way, your voice... your voice... there's something about it...

  • @bonbonquest

    You're very welcome!

And you are right, there IS something about my voice.

    Something.

  • Pay attention to scenes where the sun itself has a face. Seems to have a similarity to Burl Ives, both in that bright grin and Van Dyke-inspired beard.

This can be observed at the best of similarity in the episode "Rubber Nipple Salesmen" where Stimpy orates his speech on distributing rubber nipples to everyone, the sun shining down on him with a winking grin.

I guess Kricfalusi and the crew at Spümco had a liking for the guy...!

  • @ZENX49

    Very true!

I should have mentioned that in the video.

  • I had no idea. Thank you for making this. :)

  • Wow. This whole time I thought Stinky was supposed to be a nightmare version of Raffi, folksy childrens' artist extraordinaire, but with extra creepy lines.

  • Man I always wondered whether those were just random lines or they meant something. Now I know :D

  • @AdamLore

    Yeah, Seth Green, That's what.

  • @DinosaurCop: According to the DVD commentary of "Stimpy's Invention," John K. stated that they tried to get Burl Ives himself to perform the Happy Happy Joy song, but somehow no one could track him down. Too bad!

  • Nice use of the password screen tune from Mega Man 3 at the end.

It's also worth mentioning that in the Ren & Stimpy cartoon "Rubber Nipple Salesmen" that the face of the sun is also Burl Ives.

  • 00:58 HOLY SHIT I've never laughed so hard!!
