Wow, that sounds like a close call. I remember watching a cop show here in the UK which showed the aftermath of an accident on a motorway where a wheel came off, bounced over the central barrier and smashed through the windscreen of a car - instantly killing the driver. I also saw a dashcam video on youtube recently showing a big metal pole fall off a truck at about 80mph and missed the windscreen of the car by inches. It shows why you always need to be alert when driving.

A guy in a HUMONGOUS truck had his left from WHEEL come off. It bounced & was coming straight towards my driver-side window. I swerved to miss it and it bounced over my truck and on down the road. I stopped to see if he was okay. He was shaken up quite a bit, as was I—he managed to steer is truck to safety and I dodged his tire that, without a doubt, would have killed me had it come thru my windshield.
