  • they need a bar on the rail road crosing

  • because i think i saw your signals in the backyard cause my parents were taking me to drivers ed

  • Aah..makes sense then..didn't even think about that. LOL Thanks!

  • Yep, it's still Conrail here. You are correct on that one. :D

  • I believe this actually still one of the areas where Conrail Shared Assets Operations operates. Basically, Conrail just handles local switching to avoid giving NS or CSX an advantage.

  • Cool how it still says Conrail..Bet there aren't too many of those left out there...

  • There are different types. One checks for "hot box" conditions, meaning axle bearings overheating. Another kind detects dragging equipment such as chains, air hoses, etc. The information from these is transmitted by radio to the engineer and dispatch. Dispatch will instruct the engineer on where to stop should a defect be found. Then they will walk the length of the train to check out the issue.

Sometimes these detectors will give a false alarm causing nothing but headaches for the crews. :-)

  • What is the defect detector used for? I never heard of or seen that before?
