What is it?

Can You Hear the Sound? is a Audio/Visual experiment that utilizes the spontaneity of the Internet. It uses the Internet as a means to communicate to the masses, yet also is dictated by the intimacy of one-on-one chat. This creates a unique, intimate, and unrepeatable multimedia experience.

Are there any caveats to using the Internet?
ChatRoulette guarantees an audience. However, it does have the disadvantage that by using the Internet as opposed to viewing it in person, the viewer can decide to click away and not view the piece. Another feature that hinders the piece is built within ChatRoulette itself, in that the viewer has the unique power to report you. This causes a disconnection from the service for 10 to 40 minutes.

What was my process?
I performed a VJ piece in real-time to music I created. I used the program ManyCam to define a portion of my screen as an output for a virtual webcam. This portion of the screen was the mixing screen from NuVJ. This allowed me to show my work as a webcam. I used a stereo cable to connect the Line-In to the microphone jack on my computer; this allows the viewer to hear exactly what I hear. Finally using an Internet browser, I connected to the ChatRoulette website and began the piece. I recorded the screen using Camtasia Studio 6 and the MSU Screen Capture Lossless Codec.
The above method requires a significant amount of computing power. The second method was that I directly recorded the screen as I was mixing with Camtasia Studio 6 and used the resulting video as a source for ManyCam.
