Is it true that these men were incarcerated at the time of this recording, or is it an "urban legend"? How is this possible, that they got such a clean sound on the vocals without the echo of concrete and stone walls? Did they bring studio equipment to the prison?
Amazing song... I've heard the O'Jays, and it seems to me that this is the superior version. Of course, the O'Jays had their own major success later on, and deservedly so.
Believe it or not, I first heard this, and many soul tunes I couldn't hear on radio in my hometown on SHORTWAVE radio. Really. I listened to some dude speaking in French over the Voice of America at 1:00 in the morning from 1971 until 1976 (finally got a girlfriend by then) . I couldn't understand a word he was saying, but he played American soul and records from all over the world. It was an amazing time in radio. WLAC Nashville, WABC New York, WCFL Chicago, WWRL New York, too. MUSIC!!!
