Those of you familiar with the television documentary series, Victory at Sea, will recognize this melody as Richard Rodgers "Beneath the Southern Cross." It was adapted for the musical comedy, Me and Juliet, with lyrics added by Oscar Hammerstein II. Perry Como recorded the song on May 19, 1953 on the RCA Victor label reaching #1 on the Billboard and Cash Box charts.

  • I think this is the type of song he preferred to sing and it shows better the quality of his voice and what he was able to do.

  • There is a lovely version by an Italian opera singer called Gianluca Paganelli.

  • Ronnie Hilton does a good job on this lovely song, but does not come close to Perry's version, his voice is not as good as Perry's.

  • Great music, reminds me of watching Victory at sea with my dad.

  • "One of the many factors in his success was Como's insistence on his principles of good taste; if he considered something to be in bad or poor taste, it was not in the show or broadcast." source: wikipedia
