For those who might be wondering what exactly he's saying, he's basically talking about how meeting Ogata-san was the first time he ever wanted someone's approval of what he was doing. It was strange to him to suddenly want his approval so much, because he wasn't accustomed to needing anyone's approval for anything before. And it meant a lot to him that Ogata-san really liked how he portrayed Kenshin.
