DESCRIPTION:
Situated in the heart of Provence, the town of Arles offers visitors an ancient and
Romanesque heritage unique in the world.
The ancient theatre adjoins the amphitheatre, which was turned into a fortified town
during the Middle Ages. Lovers of antiquity will also enjoy the other Roman monuments,
such as the Trouille thermal baths or the Forum Square.
There are also many fine Romanesque and classical buildings: these include the Sainte
Trophime church with its great monumental door showing scenes from the Bible, and the
almost flat vault of the hallway in the town hall, which is a prime example of its kind
visited by the great craftsmen of France.
The tour also allows the visitor to learn more about the famous Dutch painter Van Gogh
who painted some of his most beautiful works during his stay in the Arles region.
Finally, this Provençal journey ends in Les Baux de Provence, a hilltop village amidst the
Alpilles hills, a real centre for Provençal culture.
