This film will finally get a DVD release in the U.K. on June 28, 2010 by Optimum Home Video and is now available for pre-order. The DVD will have bonus extras including an interview with the star of the film Fergus McCelland. The release will be the aprox. 2 hour version, since no print of the original 2 hour and 10 minute version could be found. The film was apparently cut to 2 hours almost immediately after the premiere. If anybody has ever seen or attended a screening of the 2 hour 10 minute version please contact me. The film was only about 85 minutes long when it was finally released in the U.S. with the title "A Boy Ten Feet Tall". This is a few scenes from "Sammy Going South" starring Edward G. Robinson and Fergus McCelland.

  • Amazing to discover there were others who haven't forgotten this movie! I saw it as a little kid and never forgot it. Now that I spend so much time in Africa, I want to watch it again. Will it be available in the USA? When?

  • @1bookwizard I don't know of any U.S. release, but there are a million good reasons to buy a region free DVD player and Sammy Going South is one of them.

  • Hi Harry!

I know there will be a public sort of premiere. Unfortunately, I will be working in Iran as a speaker on 28th June so won't be able to attend.I thought the original was 2hrs 8mins - but I was only 11 at the time!

I look forward to the release - thanks for all the info

  • @FergusVoice I hope you give a long inerview on the DVD. There are so many things I would like to know. Such as, were you cast in the movie before Edward G. Robinson had a heart attack? Did you just have to wait around a year for him to recover? Also, was the scene where Sammy bombs the crabs with rocks after his parents are killed shown at the premiere?

  • @FergusVoice I just saw the DVD and thought your interview came off very well and you looked suprisingly young for someone who starred in a movie almost 50 years ago. I thought the films DVD transfer looked perfect and I'm sure fans will be pleased.

  • This movie made a real impression on me as a kid.A great movie that you never see on TV.

  • Update: The release date for the "Sammy Going South" DVD in the U.K. has been delayed to June 28, 2010.

  • This movie is available from Amazon.com in a UK (PAL) format. A universal DVD player is required, but Philips makes one as cheap as $45. I'm negotiating with a British version of Netflix to see if I can stream the movie and record it. Good luck to the other Sammy fans!

  • This is a wonderful movie. I saw in a theater in 1963 or so and later on TV afternoon movie programs for kids and family.

  • Endless thanks onceaboy1947! ...an unexpected and delightful treat to view this again after so many years. Am most grateful.

  • ok well not sure of what release I have then Could you tell me what might have been cut out? I have always thought I had the whole film on dvd Thnx again

  • @martybearass If you have a none-UK release of the DVD, it hasn't been released in the States yet, so the only other version you could have would be the heavily cut American release, A Boy Ten Feet Tall, which had 40 minutes cut out of it. There are DVD-R's of that version floating around that have been transferred from the old pan and scan video release.

  • @syzygy2539 Someone has uploaded the entire film off the Optimum widescreen DVD onto YouTube. However, the sound level is pretty low on the upload, so you'd still be better off buying the DVD, as the sound is much louder on it.

  • I have dvd copy of this film not uk release email for details

  • A great, and truly memorable, movie. Would absolutely love to have the DVD (for the North America Region).

  • @FergusMcClelland Yes, Fergus, I also have the Japanese pressing and it was packaged far more elaborately than the British Decca single in its standard orange sleeve. The Jap pressing was in a beautiful picture cover that opened out to four pages of stills and write ups about the film (all in Japanese, of course). The Decca singles catalogue lists the British version as being released in April, 1963, so not long after the film's premiere, but too late for it to be sold at the premiere. David.
