2004 marked the beginning of an episode of very strong hurricanes in the southeastern United States. I produced and edited this video just under a year after the storms that hit Florida in 2004, and unfortunately have since let it sit on the shelf. Since then, Katrina and Rita have made the storms in this video pale in comparison. But we must try never to fall victim to hurricane amnesia, and remember that if we live in vulnerable locations, we could one day experience the big one.

This video doesn't go into the worst of the storms, but rather takes the viewer through Charley and the evacuations of Frances and Jeanne. A damage comparison is presented in the later half of the video showing how the two worst storms to affect Brevard County, Florida compared. There is also a scene showing Cocoa Beach's famous First Baptist Church in the aftermath of Hurricane Frances.

The music is original, a song called Amore Perso, which was recorded just prior to the storms in the summer of 2004.

Some other interesting trivia:

The Dairy Queen shown in the damage assessment was razed a few months after the storms passed. This was a landmark restaurant in the area having been in business for generations.

The Ramada Hotel shown in the damage assessment has also been razed since the storms. It is now bare land awaiting development into what is rumored to be a 200 unit condo.

  • You misinterpret the concept. To quote the description:

"This video doesn't go into the worst of the storms, but rather takes the viewer through Charley and the EVACUATIONS of Frances and Jeanne. A DAMAGE COMPARISON is presented in the later half of the video showing how the two worst storms to affect BREVARD COUNTY, Florida compared."

It is not meant to be an action video. It is supposed to be an impressionistic perspective of an evacuee. For action, look elsewhere. But, thanks for watching!

  • I can sum the 2004 season up in one word "CRAZY" Frances went right over my city and so did Jeann

  • 04-05 sucked! Ivan, Charlie, Francis, Jean, Wilma. All hit Florida Francis, Jean and Wilma hit my city pretty good. Francis the eye was right over us.

  • Wow! I first want to say thank you for posting this in such a respectful way. I was in Florida while this took toll, I am now in NY as I lost my home due to Mold and Mildew from the Storms. It's sad to know anyone of us had to live in this moment. To hear a gust of wind thinking trees are just to fall down, To have loved ones watch on T.V as our homes, lives are being torn apart. The Lives It takes as it breaks my heat. I just say God Bless all of us in this moment. Most of all to the ones lost.
