Victor Desarzens conducts the Vienna State Opera Orchestra

Piano: Fou Ts'ong

Fou first studied piano with Mario Paci, the Italian founder of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. In 1953, Fou moved to Europe to continue his training at the Warsaw Conservatory, where he amazed his professors with his intuitive grasp of the mazurka rhythm. His mastery was confirmed when he won the special Mazurka Prize at the 1955 Chopin Piano Competition.

Fou had been based in London since 1960, whence he embarked on a performing and teaching career that has taken him throughout the world and been distinguished above all by his authoritative interpretations of Chopin; indeed, Hermann Hesse proclaimed him to be the only true performer of the composer's work.

  • Great stuff - thanks a lot for posting!! I must admit, however, that i've never heard of Fou Ts'ong.......can you give some bio info? Why the heck did someone this good never become super-famous? Or is this just another gigantic hole in my musical knowledge base??

  • Sure. Check the 'more info' link.

  • @namdihcro: That family anecdote you mentioned here concerning Fou Ts'ong's marriage to the daughter of Yehudi Menuhin was surprising to me. May I ask from which source you learned of this story?

  • please advise the which Mozart's work he is playing? When was it?

  • Dear HMG,

Fou Ts'ong at one time was the son-in-law of Yehudi Menuhin. However, like most passionate men, he had the penchant for sampling beautiful women.

Well, well ,well, you just don't do this to the 'revered' Menuhin.

I agree with you. His interpretations of Chopin and Mozart's music are among the best.

  • Thanks - i didn;t check!! Seems that this chap IS or at least was a huge hole in my knowledge of fine performers. I really enjoy his artistry.
