From KETC, Living St. Louis Producer Anne-Marie Berger tells the history of the Lemp family—a name well-known for its beer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After emigrating from Germany to St. Louis, Adam Lemp began brewing lager beer—becoming the first to brew this type of beer in America. After his death in 1862, his son, William Lemp took over the family business and created the first brewery to ship products coast-to-coast using refrigerated railcars. In 1904, William committed suicide in the family's mansion which is now rumored to be haunted. Wiliam Lemp Jr. and William Lemp III also committed suicide in the mansion. In 1945, the Lemp brewery officially closed. But now, Lemp beer is being bottled once again—using a new recipe based on the traditional brew.

  • Ye ole Lemp Griesedieck.

  • @goldensassenach do you have information that could help recreate any of these old brews? even receipts, logs, notes... anything that might give some clues about how to recreate them.

  • @sanandreas600 any chance you could share information about the recipe? I'm a home brewer and I would really love to explore Missouri history by making beers from these old Missouri breweries. Any information would be helpful, even old receipts...

  • fakers you people either get our recipe right or get off the road we lemps are very proud of our beer and ur dragging our recipe through the mud!

  • The old Lemp Brewery Falstaff logos were sandblasted off by people that bought the brewery.

  • I live next to a Lemp....He sure likes brews!

  • So, Bud's not the only good beer in St. Louis after all...

  • There was a huge immigration of Germans to the Metro St.Louis area from 1840-1900 whom brought their brewing recipes and set up businesses.I have sorted through old maps and address books while doing genealogy and the amount of breweries listed is funny. At 1 time the court house square in Belleville,IL had : the court house, a cigar maker,a nail mfg and 6 breweries.St.Louis had tons but few have survived.

  • Am I the only one who would like to taste the original Lemp Beer? How can they be sure it wouldn't appeal to modern customers? It seems kind of daft to me to produce a once-popular brand with a different formula. New Coke, anyone?
