This is the Caledonian Tornado filmed on the morning of the 21st of September, and on the very early morning of the 22nd.

Apologies for the poor quality at the start but Tornado was early and I hadn't got to my chosen location. Tornado should have been at Denton for 07:24 but came through Ashton Moss at 07:10. With several areas fenced off it's doubtful that I would have been able to get to my location anyway. And to make matters worse, there was a funfair in a spot that was near where I wanted to film, would have been ideal, and there was access as the gates were open!

The later shots were filmed at Warrington Bank Quay with various freights, a few Pendolinos, and even a Scot Rail sleeper running through before Tornado appeared. She was running late and came through at about 00:50 - 01:00. Finally, there's a mixed freight running Northbound at around 3 am (don't ask!).

  • Nice film. Hoping to see Tornado on the West Coast main Line myself in 3.5 weeks time. Barry

  • @bkendlerA4 Thanks Barry. I was disappointed with practically missing Tornado in the morning so wanted to at least get something out the event. I was also trying a low light/night time setting on my camcorder, which I hadn't done at the Huddersfield tunnels when I filmed Lizzie on the Scarborough Flyer. I think I will also be out for Tornado on the WCML.

  • yes, very atmospheric, controversy at Lancaster made it even later, nearly didn't stop, but for a steward pulling the communication cord, hope you can get over this way tomorrow, thanks for sharing.

  • @noelist Cheers Leon. I take it it missed its stop at Lancaster? Was this on its return?

  • Well done for capturing Tornado in the dark. Very atmospheric.

  • @bobnweaver Thank you. It was worth the hassle.

  • @LMSStanier well nearly, but some passengers had to walk back through the train otherwise they'd have been on the track.

  • Cheers Phil. I wasn't sure how the night time shot would come out so I'm glad you enjoyed it. I personally would have prefered to have been on the platform for a bit more light, but still, it did make up for the problems that I had in the morning (and the night time too - got locked in the station car park all night, hence the 3am footage).

  • Nice night shot of Tornado with a bit of whistle too, sorry to hear about your earlier problem but seeing 60163 at night must have made up for it.

    Regards Phil.
