for real honestly, when I heard the song for the first time(I don't listen to much gospel music anyway only the older singers who really dedicated to christ in the church) I had no idea it was "suppose to be" or "had something to do with god". For a while I fell in love with how the song sounded, never payed attention to the lyrics till now. it's not the gospel AT ALL, both them are not speaking about the gospel. god is not santa and he will not give you everything if you get on your knees.
