Early every September, thousands of Vaux's Swifts spend the night in an old unused chimney at Chapman Elementary School in Northwest Portland, Oregon. By mid-September, most have flown south for the winter. On September 15th, 2006, Gail Whitney, then suffering from Parkinson's, watched several thousand Swifts spiral into the chimney near sunset as if part of a reverse tornado.

Gail, co-founder of Saturday Academy (a popular regional science education program) died in 2008 from the effects of Parkinson's.

  • hi.

  • there is not a risk of it being disassembled. in fact, the school has changed their heating system so that the chimney is now solely dedicated to the swifts use. yet another reason to love portland! hope you made it out here with your family for a visit.

  • I loved seeing this. I am from Oregon, we used to go see this every year; have lived in the midsouth east the past 6 yrs. Looking forward to visiting some Sept in Oregon so my family can witness this great event. Is there any risk of this chimney being disassembled? How old is it? Thanks.

  • Excellent.
