OK. Here there be monsters; I need to throw up a disclaimer for this one: I love Jack Sparrow. I really do. But my fanvids always give him the shorter end of the stick; I barely ever give him a happy ending. Well, I think he's finally gotten his revenge on me with this one...

One of the most quizzical parts of AWE, in my opinion, is the fact that Jack "kills" his "good" side (in the Locker) but still makes the ultimate sacrifice for Will and Elizabeth in the end by giving up his chance at immortality. Why? Shouldn't he have become a villain if the part of him that was noble was dead? I've decided, in this fanvid, to explore what would happen if that were actually true.

Like "Dear Jordan," reading the plot below may actually be more beneficial after viewing. Or, at least more fun since there's a wicked twist ending.

PLOT :: Post-DMC. Jack is back. After "killing" the "good man," Jack emerges from the locker a different man. He's the epitome of the "Captain Jack Sparrow" legend. Ruthless. Dictating. Menacing. Will, Elizabeth, and the rest of the crew have come to rescue him from the Locker, just like in the movie, but the man they come upon is not the Jack Sparrow they know and love; this Jack Sparrow has a secret agenda on his mind meant to doom them all. They're a little afraid of him, but Elizabeth insists that he's a good man and he'll help them. Will, wary of the relationship between Jack and Elizabeth, wants to give up on Jack and fight the war without him, causing Elizabeth to disagree. Jack watches their exchange, mildly amused that Elizabeth killed him for such a petty relationship with Will, as evidenced by their dealings with each other during the fight. However, he quickly disregards his nostalgia for Elizabeth and storms off. Elizabeth runs after Jack in effort to convince him to stay. He blows up at her, confused at why he should help them after she left him to die. Peeling away his shirt, Jack shows Elizabeth the scars from his death. Elizabeth is shocked, seeing the blood on her hands for the very first time. Distraught, Elizabeth finally understands the motive for Jack's actions (in DMC) and realizes he was in love with her. However, even if that awareness was enough to cause her to dump Will, it's too late. Jack has started negotiations with Davy Jones. Jack convinces Jones that he's in love with Elizabeth and will do anything to get Will out of the picture, even if he has to murder him. After telling Jones about Tia Dalma's prophecy for Will to stab the heart, Jack and Jones make a deal: Jack will protect the heart and Jones will kill Will. That way, Jack can have Elizabeth and Davy can save his own skin. The war commences and Davy Jones stabs Will as promised. However, Jack double-crosses Jones by stabbing the heart, sending Jones spiraling into the ocean. He then shoots Will, killing him. Jack tosses a hysterical Elizabeth overboard, her fiancé close behind. As she surfaces, she curses at Jack, but all he says in return is "cruel is a matter of perspective." Does Jack mean he put Will out of his misery by shooting him since he was about to die anyway? Or, was it rather revenge since Elizabeth killed him (in DMC)? She's left to wonder what he meant as she swims away. Meanwhile, the Flying Dutchman submerges as Jack makes ready as the new Captain. Elizabeth stumbles onto an island, remembering one of Jack's pessimistic mottos as she stands there, completely alone in the world. The Dutchman then resurfaces, Jack steady at the wheel.

director's commentary:
CHAINS! Chains, chains, chains. Er, shackles. Throughout the whole vid, Jack has this mentality that he is shackled to the "good man." However, that man is dead. All he wants now is to be set free. Jack convinces Jones (and himself) that killing Will (and carrying out the other parts of his plan) will liberate him, but isn't it ironic how Jack then must bind himself to the Dutchman, creating a new shackle for himself?

Song is "Running Up that Hill" by Placebo. I changed the title because I'm cool like that.

Absolutely no copyright infringement intended; I just do this for fun. Most belongs to the Mouse -- the rest to Placebo.

  • that was amazing as i was reading the storyline as i norally do i thought yeah right its too long not going to be that good (i do the same with short stry lines aswell for some reason) but as i watched it i realised i was wrong you stuck to the story line and the editing was simply amazing and i thought it wasnt going to be good! well you proved me wrong. Oh god i just can only think that elizabeth cursing should have been somthing other than her screaming no over and over but i loved it anyway.

  • (ahh sorry for the long delay!) you know, i do the same thing. story videos are very difficult to do and the complexity goes way beyond just coming up with a good story - the real struggle occurs within time and context constraints. it's a very delicate formula for three or four minutes, isn't it? well, i'm glad to have proved you wrong and hope the "no" part wasn't too much of a letdown. :)

  • i dont think i have ever seen such a powerful video with so much meaning behind it. im in awe at your story lines, choice of clips and portrayal of it throughout the video. it's clear that you have a lot of talent and think very hard about your videos before making them. the editing in itself was spectacular, very nice and uniquely refreshing. im.. awe struck. possibly the best PotC video that i've seen out there. CHAINZ FTW. : )

  • wow, thank you! it's so good to hear that my vids can still move people over a year after the POTC universe concluded, you know? i'm glad it touched you! and thanks again! :) [CHAINZ!! YES! haha]

  • omg I read the description and it was amazing you can tell that you really think about the story. The vid was absoloutly amazing, normally with jack people make him the chilled and relaxed but this gives you a different prespective of him.I LOVE IT

  • thank you! i'm so glad you liked what i did with jack - it was certainly a risk, and one i wasn't sure how people would react to. so, it's good to know it went over well. :) thanks again!
