Here's a live shot from a 2004 Christmas party at the bi-weekly matinee base of the "Hot Five Jazzmakers" - "C'est what?" at 67 Front St East in downtown Toronto.
It was filmed on December 18th 2004 and we can thank Mark Baker for his thoughtful camera work.
Janey Shaw takes the vocal and opens on baritone sax, switching to alto towards the end. Malcolm Higgins is on trumpet(s); Bryan Day - string bass; Jamie Macpherson - banjo and trombone/ldr Brian Towers completes the quintette. This old jazz standard is taken at quite a lick - the guys like to see Jamie really working on that tenor banjo!

  • R.I.P. Malcolm Higgins, my cousin and pal of 60+ years, who passed away in Toronto tonight. A disciple of the great Louis Armstrong, Malky started with the Clyde Valley Stompers then in Canada and around the globe. He returned to the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland every summer as a featured soloist and guest artist. Here's a sample of the great man 'imself, here is Malky as we all knew him...Sleep in peace, cuz.

  • Just heard that Malkie has died. It is great that there are videos of his marvellous playing. We have lost a treasure.
